Bears, Bakeries, and Kittens

Blue Bear's Bakery is Open!

Blue Bear’s Bakery is Open!

For once I followed through and finished a project, woohoo! I completed a full pattern set for my little Blue Bear and his little baked goods. I’m so happy how he turned out ^_^

bakery crochet set amigurumi bear

I’m still on a roll with this pattern making kick – today I’m working a picnic set for more of my minis, that is when I can find time to work on them. We’ve had a new member added to our little family:

My crochet partner

My crochet partner

This is our baby kitty, Sora! We adopted him this past Saturday. He’s so tiny, only two pounds and just turned two months. He keeps me company and gives me plenty of entertainment with his bursts of energy, I could easily run around playing for an hour or so. Of course when I do try to crochet, he’s right next to me attacking my hands and hooks. He’s such a joy to have, so glad we could give him a home. After a little while, we will be searching for a perfect rescue dog to complete our family 🙂

Also before I go, big shout out to the lovely Jane of Rainbow Junkie, she did a phenomenal job of testing and critiquing my amigurumi bear pattern, and she set me the adorable results:

little bearCouldn’t have created a better pattern without your help 🙂 I’m waiting to hear back from another tester and I’d like to share her results as well. I’ve now got the patterns for the bears, baker set, and bunnies in my Etsy shop. Each pattern also comes with a special coupon code.

I’ve become quite a hermit lately here in South Carolina. I find myself ready to find a job yet a tad more paranoid of venturing out the house. I don’t like the super busy four lane roads, the area is void of any open space, nothing in our area is unique or leisure. I really miss the suburban feel that I’ve always been around. But, I don’t allow myself to dote on this too much for my husband’s sake. This is the life we have and I decided to be a Navy wife, but this week has been my mope week lol. Next week it’s “buckle down and be a big 25 year old” week! I’ll find the silver lining and keep searching for my gem and job in this urban jungle.

Anywho, it’s time to get crocheting while the little kitten is asleep, have a great day everyone!
❤ Millie

Come see all the Projects :D

Remember that time I said I would probably have time to blog more? Yea me too, that’s like every few months I say that!!
-_- But here I am again, over a month after my last post. Oh well, here we go with updates!

First off, thank you SO MUCH everyone who sent me lovely congrats from my marriage announcement, much appreciated! Married life is still fantastic, even though now my hubby is going through boot camp. I write him everyday, and once a week I get a batch of letters full of his love and support, despite that he is the one going through all the crazy training! Once in a while we get brief phone calls (~5-40 minutes) and I’ve never felt so proud or close to him than in those moments. He’s wonderful ❤

Enough mush! I actually have gotten around to do some crafty things in my new spare time.

amigurumi projects

1. Bee, Puppycat, and Catbug set: From the first episode, I have been in love with the quirky Cartoon Hangover series Bee and Puppycat. They have some crazy out of this world adventures, with Bee being the key source of humor. Haven’t seen them? Check out the original pilot episodes here. Catbug is from another series called Bravest Warriors. While Catbug is mainly a side character, his adorable voice and enthusiasm is hard to resist! He gained popularity after his very own mini-episode premier found here.

2 & 3. Baby Elf Hats: A while ago my coworker first asked me to make her a baby elf hat. At first I had no idea what she was talking about. After looking them up, I adore them! They are so cute, I had to make more. While I’ll admit the two in my shop are very basic, I’d love to take more time to make more that have my personal touch on them. Sure would help if I had a little one of my own to be a my personal model. Maybe some day~(but not too soon!)

4 & 5. Hello Kitty Dress Up Doll: Finally! After screaming how I wanted to make a dress up doll I accomplished it! There is actually only 1 doll, but she has two outfits, two wigs, and a pair of shoes. Extremely happy all the pattern tweaking paid off, I can make countless looks 🙂 Ofcourse, I had to do a Hello Kitty inspired outfit first.

6. Colored Pencils: I hadn’t expanded much on my Kawaii Kollection lately, but I whipped up a few colored pencils I wanted to make forever ago. Simple, smiley coloring tools.

pokemon beans pikachu charmander squirtle bulbasaur

Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur

I call these my lil’ Poke’Beans! I’ll admit, they are HEAVILY inspired by Disney’s Tsums Tsums which I find so adorable, (I’m surprised my collection is only up to 7). I felt the original Poke’mon characters would look equally cute in this form.

Lee DeWyze Doll Amigurumi Doll

Lee DeWyze Dolls

Who has heard of American Idol singer Lee DeWyze? I’ll admit I had no idea who he was. One day I got a custom order, and the customer really loved his video for a song called “Fight.” If you have a few minutes –> watch! While the song is catchy, what’s captivating is the entire video being acted out by two amigurumi dolls! They tell a hilarious and unique story of what happens when a guy forgets his girlfriend’s birthday. What starts as an innocent picnic date, ends with them escaping a UFO and falling from the sky. Very adorable, and the dolls are great actors!

Will all the Mochimochi Land fans, please stand up! Chicago based knitter Anna has had her work featured on just about every craft blog, magazine, or show I’ve seen. Her knitted amigurumi are incredible, such an imaginative mind she has. I recently found out she is calling for knitters AND crocheters to take part in her upcoming project, Project Gnome Diplomacy.  She will be creating an art project in Korea, and wanted little gnomes from everyone! The link I posted has all the information, including three different gnome approved patterns that can be used. Send her your gnomes before April 21st ( sorry its so late, I recently found out!) and your gnomes will be part of the fun! Since I am talent-less when holding knitting needles (sob face) I gladly went to the crochet pattern. If anyone will be doing the crochet project, I highly suggest using crochet thread. The gnomes must be 4” or shorter, but the pattern makes the gnome about 7” with regular size 4 yarn. With my crochet thread I made my gnomes in two hours, including all the distractions and snack breaks. I hope you join!

Upcoming projects will possibly include me actually finishing those two circle purses, another dress up doll, maybe Poke’beans since they are a snap to make, but who knows my craft plans always change 😛 I try, I really do!

Anyone out there an experienced/new Navy/Military wife? A month in, and I feel I have yet to even touch what being a Navy spouse really means. I’m sure things will get increasingly chaotic when I actually start moving around, living in new areas, having him gone for long amount of times…yea will probably hit me then lol. For now, I’m appreciating all these lovey-dovey letters he sends weekly, especially coming from a man who used to hate writing!

Speaking of which, time to send him another letter 🙂
Thanks for checking up on me ~ until next time!

Love Millie ❤

This Month is a Sad Face, but atleast I have My Purse

Ugh where to begin…

In my last post I ranted raved and cheered about how excited and thankful I was to not only land a second job but to have it be crochet related, I thought it was an unbelievable opportunity. Well, turns out it was too good to be true…

The job started off kind of rocky, after a week of the brand new shop being open I hadn’t heard from my boss. I went in and she instantly looked at my toys and set them up around the shop, and told me to start working a few days later. That was over a month ago, and since then I’ve gotten only 2 more shifts. I have asked her frequently if I will ever have the amount of hours she says she will give me, and if there is anything in my performance that I could improve. She would sing my damn praises! She’d tell me I was a great worker, she loved my crochet toys, and that she’d get me on the schedule asap. With that type of reaction, you’d feel like you were doing a good job right?

Last week I didn’t have a single shift. This past Monday, I confronted her with a serious tone, asking her to let me know at that moment if she felt I was a good fit for the shop, and that this second job was needed because I fully support myself, and that I really loved working there. The few shifts I did get were amazing, I was floating on the clouds. I loved the products, the customers, and of course the many curious children that would venture in checking out all the unique products. My boss instantly scheduled me for a long shift this Saturday. I was relieved, feeling that this attempt had been successful.

Unfortunately, I just got an update from our schedule that I have been taken off that shift. No explanation or nothing. I am so hurt and confused. I don’t know what to believe. Why tell me I’m a good employee and an asset to the shop, but never schedule me and take away my shifts? It’s a slap in the face. This has happened about three times and now I’m done. I’m not sure if I even want to talk to her or inform her that I don’t give a f*** about it anymore. It breaks my heart to lose the first job I truly enjoyed. I felt so proud feeling like my crochet had taken me to an amazing place. Now this has taken a hard blow to my confidence.

I know I’m not the only person who has felt like this or had to leave a job they enjoyed, probably happens everyday with the current world we live in. I’ll bounce back probably, but I’m now constantly doubting my abilities….I had planned on making some new crochet purses, bags, toys, and baby outfits and attempt to get them in other local boutiques. *sigh* now it feels pointless. I’m in a rough place right now, so I will probably do some crochet to make me feel better. I’ve looked into getting my  crochet teaching certificate since this is really the only thing that comforts and keeps me sane lately. Not sure….

In crochet news I did make a new purse, here’s a preview:

flower purse

I’ll do a full post after I finish the second one, this one was just a prototype I made in one day. I adore this purse, the inspiration came from a pictures I found on Pinterest:

Very vague, but I fell in love. I made a pattern for it to be way bigger, it holds all my basic purse needs and then some. Plus I lined the inside with not only fabric, but strong craft board that keeps the sides sturdy. I feel accomplished to make my purse and that after a week of normal usage it hasn’t fallen apart.

I’m a mopey Millie right now but these things happen, I keep reminding myself that life goes on and I could be worse off than I am now.

I hope everyone has a good night, until my purse post, ttfn!

My Quirky Hats and Upcoming Crochet Job!

As I said, I’ve got more pictures of my hats! I haven’t made anymore this week, but I’m going to whip up one or two bases tonight. Thanks to my compact flash memory card crashing for my DLSR camera, I’m reduced to crummy pictures from my little Samsung camera. I worked over an hour taking beautiful pictures and then bam, “CARD IS CORRUPTED!”  >.< I’m happy I can still take some pictures but compared to the control I have with my larger camera, this point and shoot is seriously lacking! ^0^ Anyway, close up of each hat, and yes they all have names!

crochet cat mini top hat

Curious Kitty Kiki – a cute pet you can take with you, and you’ll always hear her little bell jingle.

The Magician's Hat

The Magician’s Hat – what’s a magician without his oldest partner? This bunny is always with you

Under the Sea

Under the Sea – *insert Disney Song here*

Push-Pop Critters

Push-Pop Critters – Push -pop inspired with a bunny ontop, a kitten in the middle, and a little bear

Candy Shop Sweetie

Candy Shop Sweetie – sparkles, candy, stars, and swirls, makes you sing “I Want Candy”

Queen of Hears

Queen of Hears – hopefully whoever wears this has the ability to control their temper!

I decided I’m going to try them out in my shop, and sell them as one of a kind. With exception for the Strawberry short cake and Black cherry ones, I’ll remake them if they sell because they are my original two. Other than those two, I will have a hard time selling the Magician’s Hat, the little bunny on top melts my heart ❤ Since they are fairly easy to make, I want to make them each from $12-$15.

And now for the highlight of my day/week/month/year: I GOT A JOB THAT IS somewhat CROCHET RELATED!
I found out I was accepted to work at the opening toy shop I mentioned a few posts ago!

My Initial Mature Reaction: bouncy_pinkie_pie_by_mrbeattyjr-d5t8wau

So I go on the interview and nervously present her 5 items of my work (2 dolls, a panda bun buddy keychain, a purple dinosaur, and a chibi bat). While I was stuttering unsure how to present my work while not sounding overconfident, she starts asking me where and how I wanted to display my dolls. I was flabbergasted! Not only did she praise my work, she opened up the possibility of me teaching crochet/amigurumi classes. What. Yes, please.

The toy store sounds really unique, offering education toys, fun toys, collectables, classes, party areas, a whole combination of creative outlets! The owner of the toy shop is a young and new business owner. I hope to learn a lot from her, because owning I business would be a dream job. I know there are going to be some kinks along the way but I want to help contribute as much as I can to the success of this lively store. While I’m happy to be possibly selling my toys, I have no idea what actions need to be taken. She says we will discuss this later this week, but I don’t know what proper steps I need to take to sell my products in the shop. She asked if I needed a licence, I’m not sure because I don’t own an official company. Do I need to copyright my toys? Will we do wholesale or just cut percentages of what sells? If so what’s a decent amount to settle on? How will this effect the prices in my Etsy shop? So much to take in, so little time.

As for if I can teach classes…that’d be so great. Getting paid for something I love to do and help others get into something I’m so passionate about? I can’t believe I have this opportunity. I’m so happy and thankful. This job will actually be enjoyable, even the starting pay is way higher than what I get paid now, and I feel like I will get much more knowledge from working here than at my current dead-end job. My financial situation would be significantly better. I know working two jobs again would make my social life a little scarce, but I have my good friends that always are willing to work things out for us to see each other. 🙂 All in all, I’m very happy to get this week going!

Other things have been peachy, Chris is out of school, and he’s spent the past few days with me which I greatly enjoy. He’s going to start work again and take a few summer classes. Once again our schedules will probably be as different as day and night, so I really value our time together. Our year & half anniversary is this month, so yipee 😀

To my readers, how goes it? Hopefully good. And for those of you in school, hope you survived your finals and passed with flying colors! I’m ready to get my summer on and sure a ton of you are too. Stay awesome, healthy, and happy! Oh yea, Happy Mother’s day! Thanks to all the mom’s who are strong enough to hold everything together in a family and all the sacrifices they make to make sure their children live happy lives. I’m so thankful I had my strong “Marmie” to help me through it all.

My Newest Little (Crochet) Girl

Crochet Mia by Millieonherworld

As usual, I have taken forever and a day and then a few more hours to update my blog. Better late than never right…yea…maybe? Okay crafty talk now~

This is Mia 😀
Finally I’ve acquired the courage to make a doll out of crochet thread, and integrate felting into my crochet projects.

crochet doll hair on mia by millieonherworld

Mia’s hair was all needle felted onto her head, and sticks extremely well, you couldn’t pull it off if you tried. She’s got two braided buns. She’s 10 inches tall, has a crochet removable dress and head band, and yup, I’m thrilled! I’ve already started on her sister, Nia:

crochet thread doll by millie on her world

Well, Nia still needs a few things, a body, an arm, maybe a pair of legs…but Mia watches over her.

While I adore everything about Mia’s outcome, the biggest thorn in my side is her dress. That simple white and purple dress took COUNTLESS times to make, Originally I wanted a fabric dress- that failure led me to a felt dress – then to a crochet tread dress – finally to this normal size 4  yarn outfit. Not the worst, but….I feel I can do better before I place her in my shop.

I’ve been looking for a doll dress maker, I really want Mia to shine! My goal is to have her as a doll little girls can play with and have different accessories/outfits for her to enjoy. I even tried Barbie doll dresses on Mia but they are too big. If yourself or you know someone who can make a doll dress for a 10 in doll, let me know, I will even do an official business deal with them, anything to make Mia a star! 😀

Lately Mia has been my most recent completed projects. As usual, I’ve got too many going on. Making a surprise gift for my sister (she reads my blog so I can’t even tell what it is here!), scarfs, hooded poncho, various doll prototypes, headbands, there are things everywhere!

Since my last post I’ve also got my hands on a new quirky camera

fisheye 2 camera yay

The Fisheye 2! This is my first film camera and as the name suggests, all the pictures have the awesome fisheye distortion. Pictures also come out in little circles! The controls are extremely simple, but surprisingly you are able to do a lot of abstract effects to your photos. Have I taken advantage of this? No -_- I’m so cautious with this camera and afraid to “mess up a shot” that I haven’t used it much. And due to me taking it out the box before reading the instructions, the first few pictures on this roll are just of the inside of my purse. My first roll also consists of my friend’s leg, a cat in a dryer, my foot, and my boyfriend’s selfie. I’ll share the decent ones if they aren’t too ridiculous 😛

Life the past few months, what to sayyyyy…

-For a month I worked two jobs. Had a horrible experience with awful management, then I quit. On the plus side, I may have a great opportunity opening up that involve my crochet toys! Wish me luck, lots of shiny sparkly LUCK!

– I have lost 2 people: My Aunt Angela “Ankie” passed away in her sleep last month. She had been struggling with diabetes for the past few years. It was very unreal to hear of her passing, especially since I’d seen her a few weeks before. I felt an overwhelming sense of guilt for taking for granted the time you have with loved ones. When I last saw her, I went to take a picture of her but my camera died. I then told her “I’ll get you next time.” We never know when the last time we see someone will be, and sometimes I forget that. She was my uncle’s ex wife, but she continued to always be around, and would still even enjoy a drink with my uncle from time to time. Due to miscommunications, I wasn’t able to attend her funeral. I regret that also.

-A week later a “friend” passed away due to skin cancer. I say “friend” because he was more than an acquaintance, but I wasn’t as close to him as his other friends.  His name was William “Billy” Coney. He was my best friend’s friend, they grew up together, and I’ve known him as long as I’ve known her (11 yrs). Whenever he was around my friend’s house, we always had laughs, me and him even had some inside jokes that ran through the years. He was only 22. And going to his wake had to be one of the hardest things I’ve done this year. It took me all night to finally go to the casket to see him lying there. With the combination of his passing and my aunts, that whole week I was in a slump, trying to not allow myself to properly morn but eventually one day at work I had a mini break down. This month I’m doing better, trying to remember to tell those I love that I do love them.

– Happier note, I once again will be seeing my parents in Nevada! Since I actually work now I can only see them for a few days, but I am so excited. Just thinking that I will be able to hug my mom again is comforting. Or the fact that I still will crawl in her lap for a super idc-if-I’m-23-I’ll-still-hug-you-with-all-my-might hug. The sight always cracks my stepdad up. Last month my sister and I sent her a cute package that included  the crochet hats I made her and this gorgeous purple purse my sister finally gave up (my mom had wanted it for years!)

– Hair cut! Four inches gone 🙂

millie mouse

Man I’ve got to stop mixing crafty creative happy posts with my emotional rant posts lol. But then again I don’t blog for anything specific really, guess its just everything me 😛

How have the few months been for all you out there? I know I’m not the only person from the midwest who almost shed a tear seeing snow Tuesday morning, how depressing was that?! This year has certainly been weird, but at this point we might as well just roll with it 🙂 Hope everyone is healthy and happy and doing the best they can in life.

I should be heading to bed, but I think I’m going to finish Forest Gump. My first time watching it as an adult and omg, even more depressing than previous thought!

Just keep swimming,
❤ Millie

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Giving myself a new style

Giving myself a new style

This is the story of the girl who loved her curls but wanted to try something new. This one girl had the mentality that “If they can do it, then I can!” And with a pair of scissors, she decided to cut herself some bangs.

The last few months I’ve wanted bangs, and started looking for a salon that would do the job. In the past I’ve had bad experiences at salons (brushes stuck in my hair, burnt with flat irons, products damaging my hair) ect), making me very picky and even scared to let them touch my hair. After hearing outrageous prices (you wouldn’t believe how much they charge for curly hair!) and salons that didn’t even have anyone who could do curly hair, I got frustrated. Yesterday morning I got a pair of scissors and had at it.

Afterward, I couldn’t decide if I liked them, or hated them, or if I looked like a clown. I called a salon my mom recommended and they said they’d give them a fix for only $10.  Walking in and explaining the situation, they looked at me like I was crazy. They sat me down, snipped their scissors 3 times and started laughing at me! They said they were fine, and they weren’t even going to charge me. Feeling insanely embarrassed, I dashed out the shop!

I know they aren’t anywhere near perfect, but I only trust myself with my hair and practice will make me a pro eventually, right? Right!

This weekend my projects are a pink hat for my mom and cupcake mittens for my cupcake hat. Also looking forward to seeing Chris and watching that movie Gravity with Sandra Bullock, heard it was really great!

Felt Friends: Mini Millie and Chibi Chris

felt dolls millie and chris millieonherworld

Taking felt plushies to a new level, I have managed to make mini versions of Chris and I and

Looking at a lot of felt dolls online inspired me to try and make my own. Lacking the ability to draw up a suitable original character, I looked in the mirror and thought, “Hey, why not me?” Before you know it, two dolls were born 😀

Mini Millie is flaunting a felt version of my cupcake dress, she ties it together with a cupcake cat hat. Her shoes are simple slip ons with cute bows on top. Chibi Chris is wearing his mellow tiger hat, with a regular green polo and shorts. And finally his favorite pair of sneakers. Their outfits are 99% inspired by real outfits their human versions have! (the 1% is Millie’s shoes being red when mine are really black….close enough.) I wanted their outfits to be perfect, even added small details like the bottom of Chris’ shoes being red, the side pocket on his shorts, and using the same ribbon on the cupcake dress as the original.

❤ These two were made for each other—literally. Originally I made my Millie doll for myself. But after seeing her sit all alone on my bed with a sad face I knew she was missing her someone special! I asked Chris what he thought, and ofcourse he said he didn’t want a doll and ofcourse by then I had already started sketching up designs. Shortly after he started pitching in his two cents and agreed that if he HAD TO be a doll, a tiger hat would be acceptable.

Mini Millie and Chibi Chris are quite the cuties. Feeling the need to be like his human version, Chibi Chris gave his girlfriend a special gift:

"This is for you!"

Her copper & black bracelet! Now both Millie’s can wear it every day.

In addition to the challenge of all the felt details, I made them bendable! I can twist and turn their limbs in different directions and they will (mostly) stay. The experiment was to play with how wire would work in a doll body, and hopefully I can transfer what I learned with these dolls to an amigurumi doll. For an X-ray of their skeleton, please look below:

How revealing!

How revealing!

For not wanting a doll, Chris was eager to make the skeleton for his mini companion. Not to mention he willingly made the mini bracelet, securely fastened it to her wrist, and fixed the bow on her dress. He’s a great crafting assistant, even though he denied even wanting a doll the whole time. I even convinced him to be super-ultra-mega-unbelievably-undeniably cheesy with me and take a picture of us with our dolls:

Millieonherworld mini felt dolls and human versions

I had to draw and crumble and redraw a bunch of patterns before finally getting one with the correct proportions. After  having to cut out and sew on every small detail, I think other felt dolls I see for sale are severely underpriced. And I must credit Etsy seller Noia Land, since my dolls are heavily influenced by the way her work. I don’t think I would’ve ever thought to make them with cute cat hats if it weren’t for her!

Felt dolls are fun, but certianly not a project I can finish within a day. I could see making a doll for a close friend or family member in the future, since this is purely for fun and plus they won’t yell at me if I take forever to make it 😛

I have had a long day and my AC feels glorious after being outside in the humidity most of the day (don’t visit Illinois in July!!). Tonight I should finish my craft swap items…I will probably just go to bed early 😀 I’m totally enjoying this very relaxing Saturday night, and I have Mini Mimi and Chibi Chris to watch tv with me (hardyharhar).

🙂 Smiley Face,
❤ Millie
